Easing The Burden of Taxes By Checking Your Refund Status

Internal Revenue Service

Right now millions of people are scrambling to focus on doing their taxes, whether it’s small business that needs to do quarterly reporting, or it’s those that are late on their initial return, there is a variety of issues that can be pursuant during this stressful time. If you or someone you know is struggling to figure all of this out, it’s time to take a simple step back and understand that this is not a complicated endeavor. However, it may seem complex at first glance. In order to ease the burden, you’ll want to look at not only how to get your taxes done swiftly, but also figure out how to go about checking you refund status whenever you need to.

The Preparation

No matter what type of tax return you need to file, you’ll find that there are several solutions that you can chase in this matter. You could go ahead and fill out the paperwork yourself, with the aid of a local library, which has to keep these forms on file and information on how to fill them out. You could even get free local aid in this manner.

Another method is to purchase software that can do the calculations, and filing for you. These range in price and some are even free online with several benefits that come alongside with it. No matter what software choice you choose, make sure that it’s approved for federal and state fillings. Once you have that, you will be able to go along and answer questions to fill out your forms automatically.

A third solution is to hire a CPA to do your taxes, whether it’s annually or quarterly. This can cost a pretty penny for some, but there are solutions that abound in every marketplace, that may even be cost effective. You’ll have to look around a bit in this regards.

Your Refund Status
No matter what option you choose in preparation, you could always go about checking you refund status, by going to the official IRS website. That’s right, you could check on your filing and more if you sign in to the official IRS page and get up to the minute information. In some instances, if you file online, you will be able to get text updates, or even email updates on the refund status that you have overall.

If you in fact have a refund pending, you will be able to get a solid answer from the IRS if you just look into it. Of course, if you don’t file, if you don’t prepare your taxes at all, then checking your refund status becomes frivolous.

You Need To Know A Lot About Retirement

Retirement

Retirement (Photo credit: LendingMemo)

2014 Taxes are here causing many people to worry a lot about retirement. If you are among these people, i.e. you feel you are far behind in your retirement or haven't started saving for it at all, this tax article will give you some advice on readying yourself for this imminent event.

In essence, opening an IRA account and increasing the amount you have allocated for savings. There are numerous tax benefits you will gain from doing so. Normally, the money saved in this account is not taxed. Furthermore, it is a great way to lock in your savings until you retire. You should also avoid withdrawing from your retirement account. Such withdrawals attract large penalties which could eventually eat into the money you have set aside for retirement.

If your employer has a retirement plan, take part in it. Many employers provide a matching plan which increases one's savings. Make as many payments to your 401K as you can. On top of offering tax breaks on your income, if your investments meet their criteria, they normally match your investments.

There are some instances where an individual is eligible for a reduction in taxes on property upon the attainment of a certain age. These put you in a position where you are able to lower the amount you owe every year. This makes it easier for you to budget if you are on a fixed income. Find out if such a plan is there in your area and see how you can apply for it.

You may want to consider Roth IRA when you are searching for a way to save for retirement without the necessity of paying taxes on withdrawals made. Since you do not have a tax write-off once you make a contribution, you will not be required to pay anything when you withdraw.

Finally, ensure that you spend your post-retirement savings wisely. Look at them as the last option in cases where you have accounts whose interest is not being taxed. When you choose to take money from an account that attracts tax, you need to spend wisely and make more money overall on taxes.

Some Common Mistakes that are Made on Tax Returns

An old Social Security card with the "NOT...Image via Wikipedia

Filing a tax return is something that many people have no problem but others find quite complicated and stressful. The process is actually quite simple but there are some common mistakes that people tend to make, which can make the processing of tax returns far slower, which can result in delays with any rebates that are due from the IRS.

Familiarizing yourself with the common mistakes that many people make on tax returns can help to make the process easier for you, as you will have a better idea of what you should and should not be doing when you complete your return. Whilst there are many common mistakes that can be made, five of the most common ones are listed below:

Problems with social security numbers: Many people make the very simple yet very common mistake of either missing social security numbers off the tax return or putting the incorrect numbers. Make sure that you check all social security numbers carefully and enter them exactly as they are shown on the social security card

Choosing the wrong filing status: Some people inadvertently choose the incorrect filing status on their tax return. If you are unsure as to which filing status you should use you can look at Publication 501, Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information for further information and guidance

Errors with calculations: Even those who are whizz kids with numbers can sometimes make a mathematical error on their tax return. It is important that you double check all of your figures to ensure that they are all accurate. You can make things easier by filing your return online as all of the calculations will be done for you, saving you a lot of time and hassle

Incorrect banking details: This is an easy mistake to make, particularly when you have been completing your form and are probably fed up of looking at numbers! However, if you put the wrong account details you will be the one to suffer, as it will delay your rebate. If you are looking to have your refund paid direct to your bank make sure that you double check the accuracy of your banking details so that processing can be done quickly and easily by the IRS

Failing to sign and date the return: A surprising number of people forget to do the very simple but absolutely necessary task of signing and dating their tax return. Always make sure that you have done this before you submit your tax return
