The last massive Powerball Jackpot left many people disappointed. However, these people shouldn't worry much because H&R Block is giving the public another chance to win some cash. One-thousand individuals will have the chance to win $1000 in the H&R Block Giveaway. The drawing starts Saturday, and it will continue to run for 32 consecutive days. The entrance fee for this remarkable lottery is currently $32 per person.

Kathy Collins, the Chief Marketing Officer for H&R block is pushing this lottery to encourage early filing. Those who file their taxes in a timely manner will have a better chance of being one of the lucky winners. H&R block prepared taxes for 24 million individuals worldwide in 2014. They also gave people an incentive to save by offering 50% discounts. By combining this lottery with their other promotions, they hope to prepare even more taxes in 2016.

They are using television ads and social media platforms to promote this lottery. Two 30-second television ads are presently running at key periods throughout the day. H&R Block is also using television ads to promote their do-it-yourself filing option. For $9.99, individuals can file their own federal taxes through the company's interface.

Promoting the H&R block Giveaway inspires the team because they get to assist individuals in two ways. Not only will they try to get the maximum return for their clients, they also give them a chance to win $1000. According to Mrs Collins, they spent about the same on advertising as they spent in the previous year. Despite the cost, she still seems content with the current direction and success of the company.

NSA To Implement Surveillance On Stock Market

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority's database tracks investors subject to investigation for wrongdoing. However, it was recently revealed that the National Security Agency can review private financial information of these investors. They can track and access this information in real-time. Even trades can be seen as soon as they occur. Therefore, the Comprehensive Automated Risk Data System seems to have welcomed such a development. Corporations and high-volume traders are known to fix the stock markets.

Then again, the government is known to manipulate the markets to avoid crashes and other issues. Research has shown that the NSA is more than willing to influence transactions on the market. Documents have revealed the NSA could be accessing financial institutions and changing around the funds in bank accounts. Its widely agreed upon that no government entity should engage in such practices.

The NSA uses various databases in order to accomplish these illicit acts. Likewise, this particular agency is known to monitor credit card transactions through various companies. It's highly likely that the CARDS database will be used to influence the Stock Market. Unfortunately, the repercussions of this development could be huge. There is no reason that the government should stick its hand in the markets in this day and age.

Springs thaw aiding economic revival

All recent business and government reports are indicating that the U.S. economy is on the rise from the cold season.

The economic experts are projecting that in 2014 there will be accelerated growth happening after two years of slow but steady improvement.

The economy continues to gain momentum as the temperatures continue to rise. Factories are hiring as they get busier and busier. Consumers are spending much more and the banks are easing up on their restrictions of loans to businesses. These positive signs are appearing throughout the United States.

TD Economics' senior economist, Michael Dolega has pointed out how the economy suffered due to the chilling winter but is poised for a revitalization as the consumers are emerging from hibernation.

For the third straight month, a popular index based on factors such as interest rates, stocks, employment and consumer confidence has gone up.

Ken Goldstein points out a 0.8 gain to 100.9 on the index indicated rising growth through spring and summer.

During the first quarter, there was a 1.3 percent growth in the economy and experts anticipate a 3 percent growth from April to June.

The Federal Reserve has happily shown that manufacturing continues to pick up.

Batesville Tool & Die has been releasing data showing increased sales.

Employers all over are anticipating much stronger growth in the coming days.

As the U.S. economy improves, binary options and swing trading options are expected to increase as well.

Google's Tax Avoidance Move

Bermuda has no corporate income tax, and one of the companies that has most recently benefited from this is Google. The company moved around $10 billion on profits to the small island country, and managed to avoid around $2 billion in income tax.

Both the US and the UK government have frowned upon this method of tax avoidance, perhaps because both countries are fighting huge deficits at the moment. A recent move which may go some way towards dealing with these tax avoidance measures is one by the European Union to blacklist certain tax havens, and to promote anti abuse rules.

Most European governments disapprove of the tax avoidance strategy that Google and other companies have adopted, according to Richard Murphy, of UK based Tax Research LLP. He went on to say that either services will need to be scaled back, or other taxpayers will somehow have to pay more to compensate for Google's non payment of their taxes.

On the other hand, Google points out that it has invested in several European countries with great success, and that it is complying with all the tax laws. In addition, Google has invested heavily in east London tech companies and currently has around 2,000 employees in the UK.

Back To School Shopping With Sales Tax Holidays

In 2005, North Little Rock voters approved a two-year, one-percent sales tax for construction of the Dickey-Stephens baseball stadium on land adjacent to the Broadway Bridge. In 2007, it became the home of the Arkansas Travelers minor league baseball team affiliate of the MLB Anaheim Angels. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
In the United States, parents of school age children know very well what that term "Back-To-School" means. This is a time during the first part of August that parents must make purchases of school supplies and clothing in order to prepare their children for school. Luckily, for those in the sixteen states that offer it, this also means special sales tax holidays to help families financially. Whether they are buying uniforms, school supplies or books, parents can take advantage of buying the items tax-free during this time. During the first weekend of August, residents in North and South Carolina, Virgina, Alabama, Florida, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Iowa, Oklahoma and Missouri have this advantage. Texas and Georgia have their sales tax holidays the second weekend of August. Maryland chooses to have its holiday the entire week of August 11 through 17, while Connecticut participates the week of August 18 through 24.

Retailers often choose to include extraordinary sales during this time to increase their revenue. Parents should look at this shopping time as having the sales potential of Black Friday. This means get to the store early and be prepared.

Shopping for back-to-school items can be very costly. However, for those who are lucky enough to live in a state that has a tax holiday, the stress of spending money can be eased.

Obamacare, Taxes, And TurboTax: What's The Connection?

English: This is a diagram depicting the percentage in US who have no health insurance by age. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
A recent survey shows that nearly 50% of Americans don't know the tax reporting requirement for health insurance. All taxpayers will need to report their current health insurance status on their 2014 tax returns. Since tax-filing season is about to begin, Intuit ran the TurboTax Health Survey with Harris Poll. Most Americans know very little about the connection between taxes and health insurance.

Still A Lack of Knowledge Surrounding Obamacare

As dictated by the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, Americans need to prove that they own qualifying health insurance. They need to prove this on their 2014 taxes in order to avoid a tax penalty. Over 62% of uninsured Americans know they're required to pay a penalty if they lack health insurance. However, 87% of those same individuals don't realize that the penalty to avoid this penalty has already passed.

TurboTax Set To Help Taxpayers With These Issues and Others

Health coverage purchased in the current open enrollment period through February 15 won't apply to this year's return. They'll apply to 2015's returns filed in 2016. Even though open enrollment is currently underway, Americans still don't know the connection between healthcare and taxes. TurboTax will warn Americans about such deadlines and show them how to fix these issues in the future. Of course, those with coverage before the deadline won't face any penalties.

Other Information From The Survey

Nearly 90% of Americans have health insurance, but residents of the South have lower coverage rates than other regions. Also, almost 50% of Americans aren't aware of premium tax credits that exist to make health insurance cheaper for low-income families. Nearly 75% of Americans with coverage from an exchange plan to renew their coverage for the following year. TurboTax currently offers a free resource for taxpayers concerning Obamacare at TurboTaxHealth.com, which users should visit immediately.

A Rise In Company Profits Shows Itself

Netflix has integrated its streaming player in...
Netflix has integrated its streaming player in many consumer electronics devices including the XBox 360 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Netflix has experienced a rise in the price of their stock due to their increased prices, which have resulted in higher profits. Internet video subscription prices have always been reasonable, yet Netflix has announced it is currently getting ready to jack up its prices for Internet streaming subscriptions by perhaps as much as $2 per month. This is said to be an assistant in covering the cost of additional programming that is going to be added to the current service.

According to the company, the increase will take place in July, with the increase in price being added at that time. The company has stated that United States based subscribers will keep paying $8 per month for a generous, yet undisclosed, period of time.

While these companies have all experienced profit growth and improvement, it has come from a place that was entirely opposite. With the market and economy in such a fickle place, companies are grabbing the profits and learning from them while they can. Time alone will show us the results.

Netflix is a San Francisco based company that made the public aware of the increase in cost on April 22. It has been reported that those with vested interest in Netflix are in approval of the price hike, and the result was a 6% surge in the company's stock. During the first quarter of 2014, Netflix earned $53 million, which paid out $.86 per share of stock. Last year the numbers were $2.7 million, or $.05 per share. To put it delicately, revenue for Netflix has risen 24%: $1.3 billion.

If we take Haliburton into consideration in comparison, we find they reported profit in the first quarter year, however, they had reported loss the exact same quarter last year. Now Haliburton sells their services to companies whose primary focus is natural gas and oil drilling. This would also include hydraulic fracturing. Haliburton sustained damage by the low prices that have undermined their gas drilling services. This company, based in Houston, reported a net income of $622 million dollars @ $.73 per share. Their revenue rose 5% to $7.35 million. Without an added charge, adjusted profit for the company was $.67 one year ago.

Another company is Hasbro. It has found its way home to making profits in this year's first quarter. The sales of toys for girls have been the biggest boost for the toy manufacturer. Having earned $32 million at $.24 per share ending March 30. Years earlier, they were suffering a loss than $6.5 million.

Forex Exchange Trading History

Global foreign exchange market turnover2
Global foreign exchange market turnover2 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The foreign exchange market is an exchange for the global decentralized trading of international money. It gives people the options trading in the foreign market. The market determines the values of different currencies.

The exchange market helps those who want to international trade and investments by helping with currency conversion. It is also the carry trade. In a typical transaction, the group buys a quantity of one currency by paying a quantity of another currency.

Some of the reasons why the foreign exchange market is different is because of its geographical dispersion, the low margins of profit compared with other fixed income markets, and the leverage to enhance profit and loss margins.

As for the forex history, the modern foreign exchange market began to form in the 1970s after decades of government restrictions on foreign exchange transactions. In the 1980s trading grew more and the greatest proportion of trades was within the United Kingdom and the United States was second in trading. The top currency traders as of today are Deutsche Bank, Citi, Barclays Investment Bank, UBS AG, HSBC, JPMorgan, Royal Bank of Scotland, Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs. Also, the most traded currencies by value today are United States dollar, Euro, Japanese yen, Pound sterling, Australian dollar, Swiss franc, Canadian dollar, Hong Kong dollar, Swedish krona, and New Zealand dollar.

So, as you can see the market is a good place to do trading with different currencies.

Bankruptcies that Shook the World (2000-2012)

2012 began with a stark warning issued by the World Bank. In its six month review of the global economy published in January, the Washington based institution advised governments to make preparations and contingency plans for an economic downturn similar to that experienced in 2008-09. Andrew Burns, the report’s author, stated that an “escalation of the crisis would spare no one”.
The fear of a double dip recession has not abated, with the worsening eurozone crisis increasing concerns around the world. In the twelve years spanning from 2000-12, there occurred the ten largest bankruptcies in world history. These monumental financial events have become key points on the grave road to our current global economic situation.

Thornburg Mortgage

The huge US mortgage lender was felled by the devastating combination of the credit crunch and US housing crash. Valued at $36.5 billion when it filed for Chapter 11 in May 2009, Thornburg Mortgage was unable to recover. Forced into liquidation, the company no longer exists and its remaining assets are still being sold to meet the claims of its numerous creditors and equity holders.

Chrysler

The Detroit automobile manufacturer is an American engineering icon. Nevertheless, when it showed signs of toppling, which would have made an enormous workforce redundant, President Obama stepped in and ordered Chrysler to file for bankruptcy in April 2009. The company was placed in the hands of the United Automobile Workers. Valued at $39.3 billion when it filed Chapter 11, the company has thankfully since recovered.

MF Global

Filing for bankruptcy in Oct 2011, while valued at $41 billion, blame for the plight of US brokers MF Global was laid firmly on the debt crisis in the Eurozone, which, of course, has taken a series of dramatic twists in recent weeks. A grand scale investigation is ongoing to look into reasons why approximately $1 billion of customer’s money, which should have been separate from the firm’s, is missing without a trace.

Conseco

The large US financial firm is a notable example of what can occur when a strategy of too eager and rapid acquisition comes undone. Filing for Chapter 11 in 2002, while valued at $61.4 billion, it was Conseco’s aggressive acquisition of firms throughout the ‘90s, which included Green Tree Financial, the largest US lender to mobile-home buyers, which caused it to succumb to immense debts. Conseco has now recovered.

Enron

The Enron scandal has come to symbolise our current epoch of corporate greed and unscrupulousness in the same way the Watergate scandal symbolised the epoch of political underhandedness, paranoia and corruption in the 1970s. The exposing of Enron’s fraudulent accounting activity led to it filing for bankruptcy in 2001, while valued at $65.5 billion, and the dissolution of auditing giant Arthur Andersen. Enron was liquidated.

CIT Group

Fortunately saved by a TARP bailout just 38 days after filing for bankruptcy in November 2009, while valued at $80.4 billion, the CIT Group is another notable example of what can happen when a commercial lender over expands their portfolio, without adequately heeding the warning signs of an ailing economy and impending credit crunch.

General Motors

The world gasped when another icon of American engineering filed for bankruptcy in June 2009. At the time General Motors was valued at $91 billion, but a crushing sales slump during the recession and the overwhelming financial crash of 2008-9 forced the automobile manufacturers into a downward spiral from which only a government bailout could save them.

WorldCom

It was extremely ironic that the telecommunications monolith WorldCom, which specialises in PR, should suffer such a reputation damaging disaster when they were forced to file for bankruptcy in July 2002, while valued at $103.9 billion. Charged with accounting and executive malpractice (not surprising given that they had joined with Enron) CEO Bernie Ebbers was sent to jail. WorldCom was eventually bought out by Verizon.

Washington Mutual

Filing for Chapter 11 in September 2008, while valued at $327.9 million, the Washington Mutual disaster came hot on the heels of the collapse of Lehman Brothers during the financial crash of 2008-9. JPMorgan Chase immediately bought out the banking operations of Washington Mutual when it succumbed to its immense losses. The fall of Washington Mutual is the largest bank failure in US history.

Lehman Brothers

The seismic shockwaves sent out when Lehman Brothers, then the fourth largest investment bank in the US, filed for bankruptcy in 2008, while valued at $691 billion, are still being felt today. The government refused a bailout and the financial market entered a period of marked instability, now referred to as the “perfect storm” or “panic of 2008”. The collapse of Lehman Brothers was the largest bankruptcy in US history and the investment bank was subsequently liquidated.
