Lower Than Expected H&R Block Earnings

Taxpayers aren't rushing to file their taxes early this year, and it's impacting H&R Block earnings.  It was announced that the company had huge fourth quarter losses because taxpayers are waiting later to file taxes.  H&R Block earnings are lower in other countries too.

Usually, H&R Block has losses for quarters that are outside of the regular season.  But the most recent losses were higher during the tax season, and this isn't what Wall Street anticipated.  Thus, the company shares dropped by 5.1 percent, which resulted $31.22 per share.  This is 2.5 percent lower than last year.  H&R Blocks also reported that they had 6 percent fewer U.S. tax returns during the first three quarters of  the year.

According to H&R Block, these loses were attributed to ongoing fraud and late tax filing.  When taxpayers file late, it takes longer for the company to process their returns.  The company also stated that the federal government as well as state governments were trying to find a way to combat growing instances of tax fraud.  Hopefully, this will result in changes within the tax industry.

H&R Block earnings had a loss of $81.7 million for the quarter.  This is equivalent to 35 cents per share.  The loss was just $36.9 million during the previous year.  This equates to 34 cents a share, and sales went up by 6.8 percent to $475 million.

Easing The Burden of Taxes By Checking Your Refund Status

Internal Revenue Service
Internal Revenue Service (Photo credit: LendingMemo)
Right now millions of people are scrambling to focus on doing their taxes, whether it’s small business that needs to do quarterly reporting, or it’s those that are late on their initial return, there is a variety of issues that can be pursuant during this stressful time. If you or someone you know is struggling to figure all of this out, it’s time to take a simple step back and understand that this is not a complicated endeavor. However, it may seem complex at first glance. In order to ease the burden, you’ll want to look at not only how to get your taxes done swiftly, but also figure out how to go about checking you refund status whenever you need to.

The Preparation

No matter what type of tax return you need to file, you’ll find that there are several solutions that you can chase in this matter. You could go ahead and fill out the paperwork yourself, with the aid of a local library, which has to keep these forms on file and information on how to fill them out. You could even get free local aid in this manner.

Another method is to purchase software that can do the calculations, and filing for you. These range in price and some are even free online with several benefits that come alongside with it. No matter what software choice you choose, make sure that it’s approved for federal and state fillings. Once you have that, you will be able to go along and answer questions to fill out your forms automatically.

A third solution is to hire a CPA to do your taxes, whether it’s annually or quarterly. This can cost a pretty penny for some, but there are solutions that abound in every marketplace, that may even be cost effective. You’ll have to look around a bit in this regards.

Your Refund Status
No matter what option you choose in preparation, you could always go about checking you refund status, by going to the official IRS website. That’s right, you could check on your filing and more if you sign in to the official IRS page and get up to the minute information. In some instances, if you file online, you will be able to get text updates, or even email updates on the refund status that you have overall.

If you in fact have a refund pending, you will be able to get a solid answer from the IRS if you just look into it. Of course, if you don’t file, if you don’t prepare your taxes at all, then checking your refund status becomes frivolous.

Spread Betting Vs Trading

Nest egg savingsImage by RambergMediaImages via Flickr

Spread betting is an alternative investment option to trading. Here, people can place bets on how a market will perform. Instead of owning shares, this is a chance to bet on everything from gold and interest rates to sporting events. Though each type of investment involves research and gauging the market, spread betting and trading are very different. The following includes some basic information on the differences between the two investment options.

Bet on the Rise and Fall of Different Markets

Instead of buying shares, people bet on the rise and fall of the market. This means that spread betting doesn’t involve the ownership of anything. Additionally, it means that a person can make money by betting against the market as well as betting on its success. This key difference offers people more options when it comes to investing their money.

Fewer Fees and No Taxes

To buy shares in the stock market, people need to work with companies or brokers who negotiate this process. However, there are often commission, broker, and annual fees that link to this. Such fees can cut into one’s profits. Spread betting does not have such fees. Any taxes or fees are linked to the spread. This ensures people make the most of their money. Similarly, instead of paying to pay taxes on profits, people do not have to do this since no shares are owned. This also saves people money, especially if the betting goes well.

Less Money Upfront

Buying stock shares can become pricey, especially if people want to make a significant amount of money. A single share with an established or up-and-coming company can be expensive, and people tend to buy many shares at once. Thus, one would need to have a lot of liquid assets or cash upfront to be able to trade and make a large profit. This is not the case when it comes to spread betting. People do not need as much upfront cash, and they can also determine their stopping point so that they do not lose everything with one bet. This is a cost-efficient way to invest money. Similarly, not owning stocks means that one will not have to deal with the time and energy of selling and maintaining or watching them. This is a far easier way to invest money without spending a lot of money and time.

If people are smart, they can make quite a bit of money with spread betting. This is a chance to benefit from price movement.
